LAHORE, July 25: Police on Tuesday claimed to have arrested the killers of Barrister Saleem Saighol.
The lawyer was on his way home from his chamber when some unidentified men had shot him dead near his Model Town residence on Dec 19, 2005.
Capital City police chief Khwaja Khalid Farooq identified the two arrested men as Hafiz Nasir and Khurram Shahzad at a news conference at his office on Tuesday.
He said that Mr Saighol was found dead apparently while resisting a robbery attempt but the case was investigated from aspects like family matters, property dispute, kidnapping for ransom, enmity with anyone and professional rivalry.
The two alleged killers, the CCPO said, used to work as conductors in a bus service company before starting criminal activities. They were also involved in the killing of Dr Nadeem in the Shadman area on the pattern of Mr Saighol and robbing of Col Aftab Ali Khan and his family on Abid Majeed Road.
Khwaja Farooq said evidence collected from the place of Dr Nadeem’s murder had led a special team of Organised Crime to the accused.
Hafiz Nasir, the CCPO said, was a resident of Jhelum and was living in the Nishtar Colony area at present.
“Nasir has four brothers and two of them are settled in South Africa while another is in the Jhelum district jail for committing robberies. Khurram Shehzad, a resident of Mansehra, used to work as a bus conductor in a local transport company and he became a bus driver in another transport company later. At present, he was living in Altaf Colony, Rangers Headquarters.”
During investigation, Nasir and Khurram confessed to have killed Mr Saighol and Dr Nadeem, depriving Col Aftab and his family of cell phone, Rs60,000 and gold ornaments.
