No surgery required for Rana: PCB specialist

By Our Sports Correspondent

LAHORE, July 24: Pakistan all-rounder Rana Naved-ul-Hasan is suffering from an inflamed bone symphis and not groin injury as was diagnosed earlier, a member of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Medical Commission told Dawn on Monday.

Rana Naved was forced to return home before the start of the first Test against England due to suspected groin injury.

However, Dr Meesaq Rizvi, who examined the talented Sheikhupura-born player here on Monday, ruled out groin trouble as the main cause of discomfort to the fast bowler.

"According to Rana’s medical reports, he is suffering from erosion in bone symphis and needs three weeks rest," Meesaq clarified.

The doctor added that Rana has been advised to go through light exercises and swimming for the next three weeks after which he would be re-examined.

Dr Meesaq ruled out the possibility of surgery in Naved's case and hoped that the all-rounder would either be available for the fourth Test against England at The Oval (Aug 17) or by the start of the five-match One-day International series which commences from Aug 30.

Meesaq also sounded optimistic about the rapid recovery of medium-pacer Mohammad Asif.

“He (Asif) might be allowed to start bowling after one week.” Asif got injured in the four-day match against England ‘A’ earlier this month and has since returned home to receive the necessary treatment on his injured right elbow.

“Asif will be tested after one week and if the bowler shows satisfactory improvement he would be allowed to resume bowling,” Meesaq said.
