KARACHI, July 23: Pre tournament favourites Wapda opened their title defence campaign when they notched up 30-13 points victory over Sindh Blues in the opening match of the National Women Basketball Championship at the NSTCC on Sunday.

Laila Kulsoom top scored for the winners with a tally of 12 points.

Sindh Greens also went down to Punjab Whites 32-31 in a nail-biting finish. The winners led 16-10 at half time with Saima Waris scoring highest 10 points. For losers, Shakila Rehman scored eight points.

Police inflicted 34-27 points victory over Punjab Blues after enjoying 17-14 lead at breather. Asma was instrumental for the winners with 10 points. In an earlier match, Punjab Blues handed 22-14 defeat to AJK.

Sabika Khurshid contributed 14 points as Islamabad trounced Balochistan 29-6 points.

Balochistan tasted their second defeat when they went down 8-12 in another match.

Monday’s fixtures:

Wapda v Punjab Blues at 10.00am; Sindh Whites v Police at 11.00am; Islamabad v Sindh Greens at 12.00pm; Punjab Whites v NWFP at 3.00pm; Sindh Whites v Punjab Blues at 4.00pm; Wapda v AJK at 5.00pm; Sindh Greens v Balochistan at 6.00pm.
