‘Opposition united on resignations’

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, July 22: Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) president Qazi Hussain Ahmad on Saturday said that there was consensus among all the opposition parties that their members of parliament would resign the day President Gen Pervez Musharraf attempted to get himself re-elected from existing assemblies.

“We are mobilising the masses and will give a final call when people got ready to come to the streets in big numbers. We have no interest in keeping the parliamentary positions,” said the MMA leader at the biennial meeting of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (Dastoor).

He said the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy knew that the Musharraf-led regime would not quit by the July 31 deadline given by the alliance and asked it to enter into talks with MMA for launching a decisive movement.

Qazi Hussain said: “No conspiracy and no attempt will succeed in creating differences in MMA as all its decisions are driven by consensus”.

Qazi Hussain Ahmad called upon Gen Musharraf to relinquish both his offices to let the Senate chairman take over as acting president and allow free, fair and transparent elections under an autonomous election commission.

He criticised the government’s response to Israeli incursions in Lebanon and Palestine.
