KARACHI: Prolonged power failures persist

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, July 21: Residents of various localities experienced prolonged power breakdowns on Friday as the distribution system of the Karachi Electricity Supply Corporation developed faults.

The KESC carried out improvement work in the western and central parts of the city in the middle of this month. During the work, North Karachi, New Karachi, North Nazimabad, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad and other areas were without electricity for at least 8-10 hours as against the four-hour shutdown announced by the KESC.

However, ever since the improvement has been brought about in the distribution system, the frequency and span of power failure have increased.

A resident of North Karachi, Sector 11-C/3, said that power supply was suspended in his locality for six hours, from 10am to 4pm. It was again suspended at around 6pm and not restored till late in the night, he added. On Thursday also, power supply remained suspended for 10 hours. “We have lodged complaints repeatedly about the frequent power failures but to no avail,” he claimed, saying that intermittent disruption had become a routine in this area. Besides, he said, when the supply was restored, the voltage remained low posing a constant threat to electrical appliances.

Residents of Federal B Area, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, and Gulshan-i-Maymar, had to spend a sleepless night between Thursday and Friday due to the intermittent power failures.

A consumer from Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Block 12, said that power supply was discontinued at 10:45am for two hours before an unending hide-and-seek throughout the night.

Similar reports were received from FB Area and Gulshan-i-Maymar.
