KARACHI: High Court issues notices to AG

KARACHI, July 19: The Sindh High Court on Wednesday issued notices to Advocate General Sindh and others for July 25 on a petition against illegal detention of PPP (SB) activist by the law enforcement agencies.

Dilee Jan alleged that his father Nihal Khan was arrested by the law-enforcement agencies from Korangi on July 6 and his whereabouts were still unknown.

Nadeem Qureshi told the court that the detainee was neither shown arrested nor was produced before any court. He sought production of petitioner's father before the court and his immediate release.

SHC's division bench, comprising Chief Justice Sabihuddin Ahmed and Justice Mohammad Afzal Soomro, after preliminary hearing of petition issued notice to the AG and other respondents for July 25 and called their comments.

CREDIT CARD FRAUD: The Sindh High Court on Wednesday ordered the concerned director of FIA to ensure arrest of two absconders, who jumped the bail in a credit card fraud case, with their sureties who furnished fake saving certificates for releasing accused on bail.

Raja Tariq Mehmood and Agha Mohammad Yawar were released on bail by SHC in 2003 in credit card fraud case.

They, along with others, are accused of fraudulently using credit cards and causing loss of Rs.2.5 million to Standard Chartered bank Karachi. Their case was pending in banking court.

The reference against cancellation of the bail was sent to SHC by the trial court, stating that the accused jumped the bail. On previous hearings, non-bailable warrants were issued against the accused and their sureties Mohammad Fayaz and Shamsuddin.

As the matter was taken up before SHC's division bench, comprising Justice Maqbool Baqar and Justice Munib Ahmed Khan, the court was told that NBWs against the applicants and their sureties were returned as none of them were available on the given addresses and they are not traceable.

The court directed concerned director of FIA to ensure arrest of applicants and sureties within earliest possible time and submit compliance report within two weeks, warning that in case agency fails to make arrest, the concerned official shall appear before court along with written explanation on Aug 10. The court also directed the director of FIA to associate with investigation officer who arrested the accused in first instance.—PPI
