Chaleswan Chur runs away with honours

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, July 18: Justifying his top billing, public fancy Chaleswan Chur came from behind to post a five lengths victory to land the feature event in the Summer Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Tuesday.

With a win in the last outing under his belt, the five-year-old bay horse, Chaleswan Chur, with Mohammad Essa astride, overtook Gullu’s Government after getting into straight to register back to back win.

A photo-finish earned three-year-old chestnut Moon Raker the third place while Jawan Bakht completed the frame.

The triumph helped jockey Essa to end the day on impressive note with a treble. His other winners were Daruwala and Yes Neighbour Yes.

The race-goers were taken aback when the supporting sixth race ended in a blaze of glory for five-year-old chestnut, Yes Neighbour Yes, who romped home by five lengths.

Earlier, three-year-old filly, Abhi Abhi, was installed favourite but gradually her stablemate Yes Neighbour Yes belonging to the same connection, came under heavy betting and won. The former even failed to finish on the board for the second time running.

The racing fraternity alleged that if Abhi Abhi was not racing fit, she should not have been allowed to compete to save public from being deceived.

Both Yes Neighbour Yes and Chaleswan Chur belong to the stables of Shah Mardan Shah Pir Pagara.

Champion Express, made it two in a row when he registered a facile 14 lengths victory over filly, Juliat, in the opener. Its trainer C. Colaco has returned to the mainstream after a layoff as his trained horses were making headlines. In addition, his other winner of the day was mare, Countess Mah Again. He is the only Christian trainer among the lot.

Bay horse, Daruwala, created quite a stir when he beat filly, Annaba, by four and a half lengths.

Chestnut filly, Make Millions, who was installed favourite had to be content with third slot due to lack of racing run.

With M. Wasim II in the saddle, Ladla picked up spoils in the third race edging out Kinjehar by two lengths.

Another surprise was in store for racing crazy public when M. Nasir galloped mare, Sweet Grandy, to five lengths victory in the fourth race. Nasir has replaced Nadir Ali at the eleventh hour.

Rider M. Amjad presented owner Mohammad Faisal with a winner when he piloted Countess Mah Again by a wide margin of 10 lengths.
