Flood triggers by erosion hits 20 villages

SUKKUR, July 17: About 20 villages of Deh Daulatpur were submerged by flash torraent from the Indus River following and erosion about 20 kilometres from Daharki town in Ghotki district on Monday.

According to reports reaching here, stocks of grain, valuable and livestock were washed away.

The affected villages are: Haibatpur, Budo Solangi, Ghazi Mirbahar, Pir Bux Solangi, Ghulam Hussain Solangi, Ahmed Din Solangi, Manzoor Machi, Dur Mohammad Machi, Mulla Kori and Wahid Bux Mochi.

Residents of the villages moved to embankments for safety.

They told newsmen that they lost cash, ornaments, clothes, grain stocks and cattle.

Ghotki DCO Hidayatullah Rajper told Dawn that the villages were situated on an island in the bed of the river.

He said that the area had submerged last year and the inmates were vacated from the affected areas.

He said that the people had settled in the area again.

He said that at present water was below the danger mark while the stone pitching work to strengthen the embankments was already under way.

MAN KILLED: One person was killed on Monday over an old enmity, near village Drig Pur in Garhi Khairo.

According to reports reaching here, victim Manthar Buledi was on way to Garhi Khairo from Shahdadkot in a passenger wagon. When the vehicle reached near village Drig Pur, three armed persons intercepted the vehicle, dragged Manthar Buledi out, shot him dead and fled.

The Garhi Khairo police claimed the murder the result of old enmity.

TWO DROWN: A minor boy drowned in a watercourse and a three-year-old girl in a pond in Bahoo Khoso and Thull, respectively.

Reports said Saima, daughter of Mir Hassan Essani, had been playing close to the watercourse when she had slipped into water. Later, her parents fished out her body.

In village Khadim Ali near Thull, a minor boy Shahid Ali, 5, slipped in the pond and died.

DEMO: Scores of nazims and councillors belonging to the Mahar group staged a demonstration against Sindh Irrigation Minister Nadir Akmal Leghari.

They alleged that the minister was facilitating issuance of computerised national identity cards (CNIC) to people of Punjab from Mirpur Mathelo.

Reports reaching here said protesters led by Nadeem Chachar, Akhtar Sanghar, Altaf Abro and Jeewat Ram had staged the demonstration in front of the Ghotki press club. They were raising slogans against the minister.

Local people were being deprived of their rights due to issuance of CNICs to the people of Punjab and threatened to launch a protest movement if the government did not take action against the minister.

ANTI-POLICE DEMO: Scores of Bhangwar tribesmen staged a demonstration in Kandhkot on Monday against the Buxapur police for non-arrest of the killers of two Bhangwar tribesmen, who were killed 15 days ago.
