Indians hope to boost pace reserves

NEW DELHI, July 15: India's selectors are hoping more pace bowlers will come to the fore ahead of next year's Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean.

Youngsters Munaf Patel, Shanthakumaran Sreesanth and Vikram Singh performed well on recent West Indies tour.

But chief selector Kiran More said: “We should have at least seven to eight such bowlers ready to play. With 40-50 one-dayers and quite a few Tests every year, it's important to have enough genuine fast bowlers. This will help us rotate them properly.”

India's next assignment is a triangular one-day series in Sri Lanka, also involving South Africa.

And they will be looking for a return to form after losing 4-1 in the Caribbean, a result which was lost amid celebrations of their 1-0 victory in Tests.

“We will try and improve on mistakes made in last one-day series, but our plans for next year's World Cup will continue. We should not panic now,” he said.

There could be one or two changes for Sri Lanka, with More explaining: “Fringe players of India ‘A’ team could be a good choice for us – provided age is on their side. After all, experimentation can surprise other team.”

Indian tour squad is due to be named on Thursday, with their first game against Sri Lanka on Aug 16.—Agencies
