ISLAMABAD, July 14: The Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, on Friday said all opposition parties would cooperate in the “decisive anti-Musharraf government movement.”
He criticised the United States for vetoing a resolution calling for a halt to ongoing Israeli attacks on Lebanon and feared that it would encourage Israel to continue its operations in Lebanon and Palestine.
Talking to journalists outside a mosque after delivering a Friday congregation sermon in the federal capital, Maulana Fazl condemned a statement of President Gen Pervez Musharraf “defying the Chief Election Commissioner’s opinion that he cannot run election campaign of a political party.”
“This is a violation of the constitution under which the CEC is working, which has substantiated opposition’s apprehension about holding free and transparent elections.”
The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal secretary-general said opposition parties agreed that the military-led government could not be removed till a joint campaign was launched.
For this purpose, he said, parleys between the MMA and the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy were in progress. He hoped that a joint strategy would soon be chalked out.
Earlier, in his Friday sermon, Mr Rehman condemned the Israeli attacks on Lebanon and the killings in Palestine.
He called upon the Ummah to take a unified stand against the violence against humanity.
