KHAR: Jirga to hold talks with banned group

By Our Correspondent

KHAR, July 14: Elders of Mamond tribe in Bajaur Agency have constituted grand jirga to hold talks with the leader of a banned group, Maulana Faqir Mohammad, who has resurfaced after two years.

The jirga led by the tribe’s chief Malik Shahjehan will go to Damadola on Saturday for talks with Maulana Faqir.

The maulana and his armed supporters had held a meeting in Omari village in protest against a raid on his home. Sources said the administration had taken notice of rally and display of weapons in violation of a ban.

The agency’s Assistant Political Agent Abdul Qayum Khan on Friday asked tribal elders to fulfil their legal responsibilities and stop the maulana’s unlawful activities in the area.

The sources said the elders of the tribe had signed an agreement with the political administration under which nobody would be allowed to provide shelter to suspected militants and display weapons.

They said the maulana was wanted by the administration for providing shelter to suspected militants and other illegal activities.
