SC takes notice of Karachi killing

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, July 13: The Supreme Court on Thursday took suo motu notice of the extra-judicial killing of a suspect in Karachi during a shootout with police and ordered the Sindh Inspector General of Police to appear before the court in Lahore on July 18.

The Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, directed the Sindh police chief to submit a report in the matter on July 18.

Sindh advocate-general Anwar Mansoor was also summoned.

The CJ took the action on a press report about the killing of the suspect, Mazhar Iqbal, by the Karachi police on the main road near the DJ Government Science College.

The report said police had killed Mr Iqbal in violation of Articles 9, 10 and 14 of the constitution.

In another suo motu notice, the CJ summoned the NWFP advocate-general in the Supreme Court, Lahore, on July 17. The advocate general was directed to produce a couple booked under Hadood laws.
