KARACHI: Moves against Islamic laws to be resisted: MMA

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, July 13: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal has renewed its pledge to frustrate all attempts to repeal the Hudood Ordinance and other Islamic laws, and vowed to launch a vigorous campaign to defend such laws.

President of MMA’s Sindh chapter Asadullah Bhutto told the Ulema Convention, held at the Idara Noor-i-Haq, that the government would do away with all Islamic laws, including the anti-blasphemy law, if it was not stopped from amending or repealing the Hudood Ordinance at this point of time.

He urged ulema to create awareness among faithful about the necessity, importance, sanctity and worth of Islamic laws in their sermons, and said that people must know that the rulers would not refrain from changing the Islamic culture of this country unless masses took to the streets.

The convention was organised by the MMA to counter, what it believes, the drive jointly launched by the government and certain NGOs against the Hudood Ordinance.

In his presidential remarks, Asadullah Bhutto (MNA), warned that the rulers were financing certain NGOs to mobilise public opinion against Islamic laws.

Maulana Bhutto, claimed that the PPP and MQM were united against the Hudood Ordinance, pointing out that Ms Sherry Rehman of PPP had moved a bill in the National Assembly against the ordinance but her move was foiled by the MMA and PML-N. Later again, Ms Kashmala Tariq, with the help of these two parties, presented a similar bill which was also defeated, he said.

Maulana Bhutto said that Ms Sherry Rehman had once again moved such a bill which was currently under discussion in the assembly. “Fate of this bill also, Insha Allah, will not be different from the previous ones,” he assured the audience.

Rejecting all arguments by the NGOs against the ordinance, he pointing out that there were only a few women facing trials under Hudood Ordinance but the government and the NGOs were creating an impression that the ordinance was responsible for the plight of all women in jails.

Maulana Abdul Rauf told the convention that the ordinance itself had no flaws but the way it was being used and implemented was wrong.

Maulana Khan Mohammad Rabbani accused Gen Pervez Musharraf of seeking enforcement of western policies in Pakistan. In this context, he referred to the changes being made in syllabus.

Dr Mairajul Huda Siddiqui declared the ongoing campaign against the Hudood Ordinance as anti-Islam and anti-Pakistan.

Qari Allahdad, Qari Fazl Akbar and Mohammad Hussain Mehanti, Nasrullah Shaji, Hameedullah Khan, Yunus Barai and Abdul Halim Ghauri also spoke.
