Australia ‘A’ on top

DARWIN (Australia), July 11: Test opener Phil Jaques hit form with a tidy 60 as Australia ‘A’ reached 307 for five on the opening day of their four-day match against Pakistan ‘A’ at the Marrara Cricket Ground on Tuesday.

Mark Cosgrove, Shane Watson and Brad Haddin also made half centuries as Australia ‘A’ batted themselves into a commanding position by the close of play.

Australia lost their first wicket cheaply but Jaques and Cosgrove put on 117 for the second wicket to strengthen the innings before Cosgrove was out for 61.

Jaques was bowled shortly afterward for 60 and Australia ‘A’ slumped to 166 for five before Watson and Haddin led a late revival.

Watson made 72 and captain Haddin made 68 to guide their team into a position of strength.

“We got off to a reasonable start I guess and just lost our way a little bit in the middle, but the boys recovered really well at the end,” Jaques said.

“Brad and Shane just batted outstanding so we are sitting pretty at the minute and hopefully we can get off to a good start in the morning and get a big score on the board.”

Meanwhile, New Zealand ‘A’ recovered from a poor start to reach 257 for four by stumps on day one of their four-day match against India ‘A’ at Darwin’s Gardens Oval.

Mathew Sinclair and Michael Papps shared top-score of 76 as the New Zealanders fought back after the loss of opener Matthew Bell.

Test batsman Craig McMillan was 62 not out when stumps were drawn.
