PESHAWAR, July 10: A Pakistani surgeon and his wife have been nominated for the Robert Burners Award in Scotland for their services after the Oct 8 earthquake in the NWFP.

Dr Tahir Hassan and his wife Helen Hassan rendered services in Abbottabad and other earthquake-affected districts of the province.

The family of a Palestinian soldier killed by Israeli forces was among contestants for the award for donating the organs of the deceased. The recipients of the organs included four Jews.

Dr Hassan, born in Mardan district, retired as consultant surgeon from the Lady Reading Hospital.

He moved to Scotland with his British wife, who is a nurse.

Last year, the couple established a charity, Bridging Frontiers, in Scotland, that rendered healthcare services in the earthquake-hit areas.

Dr Hassan has also offered the provincial health department to establish a burns ward in the Lady Reading Hospital.
