KARACHI: PPP slams persisting power, water crises

By Our Reporter

KARACHI, July 10: The Karachi Coordination Committee of the Pakistan People’s Party has expressed concern over the continuing power breakdowns of long duration and water shortage in Karachi.

The committee under the chairmanship of Aftab Shabaan Mirani at Bilawal House on Monday. PPP Sindh President Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Leader of the Opposition in the Sindh Assembly Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, Prof N. D. Khan, Taj Haider and other leaders attended the meeting.

Referring to the persisting power and water crises in Karachi and other parts of the country, it noted that had such a situation prevailed in any other country, the government of the day would have resigned and gone home. It seemed that the regime was deliberately punishing citizens and destroying the industrial base of Sindh. “Is this the reward of privatisation given to the poor?” it asked.

The KCC also expressed concern over the continuing water shortage in the city in spite of improving water availability position. It is a known fact that the federation is not providing Sindh its due share of water while the provincial irrigation department has become a hotbed of corruption. It also noted with much concern that pro-government landowners were being provided extra water while those opposing the regime were being denied even their due share.

The meeting appealed to the civil society organisations, trade unions and NGOs to come forward to endorse the Charter of Democracy and work hand-in-hand to ensure elimination of army’s role in politics forever. It was observed that rulers and their allies were in disarray and in the process of fragmentation.

It noted that the allegations of massive corruption in the Karachi Stock Exchange involving top state functionaries were only a tip of the iceberg. The ways the national resources and assets are being plundered have no example.

The KCC meeting demanded that a neutral non-political commission should probe into all allegations pertaining to the privatisation of Pakistan Steel and devouring of hard-earned money of the small investors in the stock exchange scam.

The committee also expressed its grief over the loss of many lives in a PIA plane crash near Multan, and demanded a thorough investigation into the incident.
