Swing should overcome despite harshly treated by handicapper
By Aftab Gilani
LAHORE, July 8: Four-year-old colt, Swing, will be in action in the feature event of the day and night Lahore Summer Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.
Owned by Mian Maahir Ahmad, Swing, after winning three races in a row was a complete failure in the Pakistan Derby in March last.
Since then he ran only once and finished fourth on June 18 last.
Although the colt has been treated a bit harshly in the handicap assigning nine stones five pounds, he will put up a good fight with top weight Sher-i-Gujrat and Miss Photogenic among seven runners drawn for Shahdara Plate class IV division I and II to be gone over 1200 metres.
Swing is trained by A. B. Malik. This will be the seventh race of a card comprising as many races.
Three-year-old filly, Discovery, who registered a facile win after tasting three consecutive defeats, will be going all out to make it two in a row.
This filly from Cisco Wells out-of-Dante Again, had won a good race on June 25 last and has been promoted to class V division I.
If Discovery puts up a similar performance she will win this fifth race of the day Cross Ruff, Daisy Against All and Poly Love may fight for the frame.
The sixth and supporting event, Shahdara Plate class IV division III looks a match between a colt, Gold Krik and the filly Top Cat. The colt Bright Star and Druree will contest for lower positions.
Three-year-old filly Desert Queen is well placed in the handicap to claim the fourth race. She has to beat Royal Fish, Major Rana and Jewna.
Meanwhile the Lahore Race Club (LRC) chairman, Tariq Aziz has taken serious note of the unsatisfactory running of two horses during races last Sunday.
He has imposed a fine of rupees 20,000 on the trainer Sohail Aziz for not sending his filly Jago to run on merit in the first race and stopped entries of Jago in races for two months.
He has suspended rider A. Imran for three months for his unsatisfactory handling of Baker’s Gal and fined rupees 10,000 also.
Baker’s Gal is owned by Javaid Khalid, a steward of the Jockey Club Of Pakistan (JCP).
These punishments are part of LRC’s cleansing operation to make sports transparent and fair to the maximum possible extent and for this the horses belonging to even stewards are not spared.
A card of seven races, two over the sprinting distance of 1000 metres, three over 1100 metres and two over 1200 metres will be decided.
The first race will be held at 5pm.
