Pottery units closed in protest against gas rate hike

GUJRAT, July 8: Owners of pottery industry have closed down their units for 20 days in protest against recent increase in gas tariff by the government.

Both the pottery associations, led by Haji Nasir and Safdar Warriach, have unanimously decided to close down all the units registered with both associations. The decision was taken on July 1 while the units would remain closed till July 20.

Mr Warriach told Dawn that if the government did not withdraw raise in gas tariff, the units’ closure date would be extended till the acceptance of their demand. Thousands of workers have been rendered jobless due to closure of units. They demanded that the government should withdraw the decision immediately to save them from starvation.

CASE REGISTERED: Sarai Alamgir police on Saturday registered a case against one of its sub-inspector for negligence and dereliction of duties.

The case was registered against SI Akram on the directives of SP (investigation). A murder accused, Shahid Yousaf, escaped from SI Akram’s custody.

The accused was involved in the killing of constable Shahid Shah in an encounter a few days ago.

APPOINTED: Punjab IGP had appointed Malik Tahir Mahmood as SSP, special branch, Gujranwala.

Malik Tahir had been SP (investigation), Gujrat, when he was appointed Okara DPO one year ago.
