US hints at vetoing ME resolution

By Our Correspondent

UNITED NATIONS, July 8: The United States has indicated that it would veto Qatar’s draft resolution submitted to the Security Council on behalf of the Arab group calling upon Israel to ‘cease its aggression against the Palestinian population in Gaza.

The draft also urges Israel to withdraw from the Gaza Strip.

US Ambassador John Bolton said Washington opposed the resolution entirely and suggested it could veto it when it comes for a vote.

France called the resolution unbalanced in its criticism of Israel as it does not condemn the kidnapping of an Israeli soldier by Palestinian militants and makes no mention of Palestinian rocket attacks.

The resolution calls upon Israel to ‘scrupulously abide by its obligations and responsibilities under the Geneva Convention, and expresses its ‘grave concern about the dire humanitarian situation of the Palestinian people.

“We hope that the Security Council would rise to the occasion and would adopt a resolution and send the appropriate message to Israel to stop its aggression,” said Riad Mansour, the permanent observer of Palestine.
