ISLAMABAD, July 7: The Supreme Court on Friday hosted a reception for the diplomatic corps in Islamabad to apprise them about the forthcoming International Judicial Conference.
Some 63 foreign diplomats including ambassadors, deputy chief missions and charge de affairs participated from all the five continents. The judges of the Supreme Court and senior officers from the Foreign Office also attended the reception.
CJ informed the diplomats about the details of the event being organized by Pakistan’s Supreme Court in which the chief justices of the superior courts from across the world have been invited.
Besides, prominent jurists from foreign countries and local jurists as well as intellectuals including serving and retired judges, members of the bars, academia and media have also been invited.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry said the conference was a global event to be attended by the highest luminaries from the judiciary as well as other intellectuals from abroad as well as from within the Pakistan.
The theme of the conference is “justice for all” in which important topical issues would be addressed. The conference would provide an opportunity to the judicial luminaries to discuss issues and share perceptions as well as experiences, CJ said.
The purpose was to share knowledge and learn from one another so as to improve the system of dispensation of justice and provide relief to the aggrieved persons.
Important topics like the role of judiciary in combating terrorism, trafficking in human, trafficking in drugs are being addressed.
The conference, he said, was an opportunity to reiterate Pakistan’s strong commitment to international cooperation, peaceful co-existence and amicable resolution of conflicts and tensions.
These are issues of global dimensions and require a concerted efforts from all countries across the globe, CJ observed.
An important objective of the conference would also be to enable judiciary to play its role effectively so as to create and enabling environment for good governance and economic development, gender mainstreaming and empowerment of the deprived and disadvantaged. “These are crucial factors for growth and economic development, which will usher in era of peace and prosperity,” the CJ said.
The conference would also demonstrate that there is conducive environment in Pakistan for business and investment and other ongoing economic project, CJ believed.
