IMF on WTO trade talks

WASHINGTON, July 6: A successful conclusion to the latest round of global trade talk is critical for countries to benefit as much as possible from globalisation, International Monetary Fund (IMF) spokesman Masood Ahmed said on Thursday.

“We strongly believe that it is important for the world and for the developing countries and all parts of the membership to have a successful conclusion to the trade round,” Ahmed said days after 60 trade ministers failed to thrash out a pact in Geneva.

“We see, more importantly, a fair, effective and rule-based multilateral system as being a critical component of both globalisation that works but also a critical component enabling countries to take advantage of the opportunities that a global economy can provide,” he told reporters at IMF headquarters. —Reuters
