KINGSTON, July 2: Seamer Corey Collymore completed a five-wicket haul as the West Indies wrapped up the Indian second innings on the third day of the fourth and final Test on Sunday.
India, resuming on 128 for six, could only make 171 all out with Collymore taking five for 48 in 24.1 overs. That still left the West Indies with a daunting target of 269 to win the Test and the series.
That would not only be the highest total of the match, but the most runs ever scored at Sabina Park to win a Test and the West Indies were facing an uphill task on 18 for one at lunch.
Collymore's fourth five-wicket haul in his 23rd Test took his tally of wickets in four Tests at Sabina Park to 27.
The West Indies had to wait 8.5 overs for their first wicket of the day, Anil Kumble (10) fishing far forward for a back-of-a-length delivery from Collymore and edging a catch to third slip, which was neatly taken by Dwayne Bravo.
Indian captain Rahul Dravid, who scored 81 in the first innings and is the only man to pass 50 in the match, held the Indian second innings together as well, scoring 68.
Collymore was fortunate to claim his wicket when Dravid went back to a delivery that kept exceedingly low and cannoned into the stumps.
The West Indies had seven overs to survive before lunch but Chris Gayle, who made a duck in the first innings, bagged a pair when he edged the second ball of the innings to second slip.
Daren Ganga and Brian Lara survived an awkward half-an-hour on an increasingly unpredictable pitch, going into the break on 10 and eight not out respectively.
On Saturday Dravid scored his second half-century of the match on a spiteful pitch, to take India to 128 for six in their second innings at stumps.
Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh earlier put India on the path to victory when he took five for 13 to bowl the West Indies out for 103 in their first innings, giving the visitors a lead of 97.
The West Indies were bundled out in just 33.3 overs, losing their last seven wickets for 31 runs.
The watchful, technically correct Dravid and Vangipurappu Laxman took their third-wicket partnership to 43 after tea and Dravid then put on 46 for the sixth wicket with wicketkeeper Mahendra Dhoni in the only two meaningful partnerships of the innings.Laxman scored 16 before a half-hearted prod outside the off stump edged a Collymore delivery to Lara in the slips, the West Indies captain taking the catch inches off the ground.
Yuvraj Singh failed to get going, also falling to the Collymore/Lara combination as he edged an expansive drive after he had scored just 13.
Left-arm seamer Pedro Collins then picked up his first wicket of the innings when he bowled Mohammad Kaif for six, the ball deflecting off the inside edge of the bat.
Dhoni scored a scratchy 19 before a Taylor delivery squatted on him and whizzed into his stumps.
Anil Kumble, who rose to the occasion in the first innings by scoring 45 in a 93-run partnership with Dravid, was with his captain at the close on two not out.
The West Indies were earlier bowled out for 103, with Harbhajan destroying the lower-order with five for 13 in 4.3 overs.
