Laser readable number plates under study

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, July 2: The Islamabad Capital Territory administration is considering replacing existing digital vehicle registration number plates with laser readable ones, sources told Dawn.

The sources said district administration had also sought comments from Islamabad police and National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) in this regard.

According to the proposal, the laser readable vehicle registration number plates would have bar codes, which could be read with devices installed at different check post at Islamabad and all the exit and entry points of the capital.

The sources said that the bar codes would contain information like owner’s name, CNIC number, residential address, vehicle engine and chassis number, and some other details about involvement in criminal activity.

The project would help in curbing vehicle lifting and would make it easier for the law enforcement agency to verify vehicle’s detail on the spot, instead of referring the case to Rescue-15 or police control.
