HYDERABAD, July 2: The Sindh Abadgar Board has demanded a probe into what they termed frequent violations of the water accord, supply of more water to Punjab, exemption to the NWFP and Balochistan in water shortages and non-supply of water to 60 per cent channels at the tail-end and an unending water rotation programme.

The board has appealed to the president and prime minister to appoint an enquiry committee, comprising experts of the Army Engineering Corps, retired senior officials of the irrigation department and representatives of farmers.

A board meeting, presided over by Abdul Majeed Nizamani, held here on Saturday also demanded that the committee should enquire as to who had permitted the cultivation of high delta crops, including rice in the cotton zone, and why the trees on the protective embankments right from Sukkur to Kotri had been destroyed.

It regretted that all the effluent of upcountry, including industrial waste, was being released in natural waterways, which was destroying agricultural land of Sindh.

It also demanded an inquiry into release of 15,000 cusecs of water in the Chashma-Jehlum link canal and less water to Sindh.

It took strong exception to the non-release of water downstream Kotri and destruction of eco-system and mangroves in Sindh.

It called upon the Sindh chief minister to take steps for the rehabilitation of river and sea forests, total ban on the cutting of self-growing trees and bushes in Thar and Kohistan and use of fine nets for catching fish.

It further demanded that complete ban should also be placed on the use of veal.
