272 workers killed in BD this year: study

DHAKA, July 1: A total of 272 Bangladeshi workers were killed, 1,505 others injured and 33 were raped over the last six months

A study conducted by the Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies (BILS) released on Friday said that of the 33 raped female workers, six were killed after physical violence, while of the 272 workers who lost their lives, 83 were women.

The BILS report was prepared on the basis of reports published in 16 national dailies.

The findings show that the rate of fatal occupational accident was high in the garment sector. As many as 88 workers were killed and 874 injured in this sector.

The second largest casualties took place in the construction sector, where 58 workers were killed and 131 injured, followed by 14 deaths in the transport sector.
