Final Test: Sleepy India make painful progress

KINGSTON, June 30: India struggled to 29 for two at lunch on the opening day of the fourth and final Test on Friday after their openers had made one run between them.

The tourists were reeling at three for two with the loss of Virender Sehwag for nought and Wasim Jaffer (1) in the opening four overs.

Vangipurappu Laxman was unbeaten on 14 at the break and captain Rahul Dravid had made 13 as they batted with extreme caution against a fired-up West Indies attack revelling in the vagaries of the pitch.

Ramnaresh Sarwan, fielding at short leg, took a superb reflex catch to remove Sehwag off the third ball of the day, bowled by left-arm seamer Pedro Collins.

However, Sarwan's joy turned to pain during Collins's next over when Jaffer's pull hit the 26-year-old on the left kneecap and he had to be carried off the field.

Jaffer was bowled by a superb delivery from Jerome Taylor that held its line and beat the batsman for pace to hit off stump.

Brian Lara spurned a chance to dismiss Laxman on five when the batsman edged Corey Collymore's third delivery to second slip, but the West Indies captain was off-balance and he spilt the comfortable catch.

Collins and Taylor used the new ball brilliantly and had figures of one for four and one for eight respectively in seven overs apiece.

Both teams were unchanged from the drawn third Test in St Kitts earlier this week. The series stands at 0-0.
