LARKANA, June 30: A large number of farmers and activists belonging to different political parties took out a procession in Qambar town on Friday in protest against an acute water shortage in the command area of the Warah canal.
The call for the protest procession was given by the Save Sindh’s Agriculture Alliance.
The protesters marched from Anaj Mandi to the press club.
Mithal Khoso led the protesters. Speaking on the occasion, Moharram Chandio and Dr Nooruddain Bhutto criticised officials of the Sindh irrigation department for water shortage in the Warah canal and its watercourses which irrigate thousands of acres of land.
They said that recently transplanted paddy seedlings were dying and hundreds of acres of land had yet to receive water.
They said that farmers had faced tough situation due to the water shortage.
They feared that their crop would be attacked by pest due to late sowing. They appealed to the Sindh chief minister for prompt action against irrigation officers and improving water situation.
APC: The all-party conference held in Qambar on Friday said that if water situation was not improved by July 3, activists of component parties would stage a demonstration in Larkana at the Rice canal’s Lahori regulator.
JIRGA CONDEMNED: Speakers at a seminar held at a local hotel on Thursday condemned holding of tribal assemblies (jirga) in Sindh.
They said that the state had given law and police in the hands of feudal lords to win their favour to ensure its rule.
The seminar “Tribal Conflicts and Jirga system: a threat to peace” was organised by the Liberal Forum Pakistan.
People’s Party Parliamentari-ans MNA from Karachi, Ms Fauzia Wahab, said that tribalism was a big hindrance to the development of nations. She said that the sardari system was in vogue because the government had failed to establish its writ.
“The instable political system has given way to many evils and tribalism is one of them” she said.
High Court Bar Association, Larkana, general secretary Babu Sarfraz Jatoi said that jirgas were being held because the judiciary had failed to provide cheap and speedy justice.
