Lawyer allowed to tell Hamdan of court win

WASHINGTON, June 30: The US military is making arrangements for a defence lawyer to notify Ahmed Salim Hamdan that the Supreme Court struck down as unlawful the military commission set up to try him, a senior administration official said on Thursday.

The official said he could not say whether the other 450 ‘war on terror’ detainees at the US detention centre at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, will be told about the ruling.

“The commander’s staff at Guantanamo is allowing Mr Hamdan’s attorney to speak to Mr Hamdan today, or to somehow communicate with Mr Hamdan today, about the results in the case,” the official said.

Hamdan, a Yemeni who served as a driver for Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, faced trial by a military commission on a single charge of conspiracy to commit war crimes and terrorism.—AFP
