LAHORE, June 29: PPP (Shaheed Bhutto) secretary-general Dr Mubashir Hasan on Thursday said the Charter of Democracy had failed to address the ills of feudal and capitalist system, besides being vague on any action plan against the global imperialist powers.
“This is a document which provides for, rather strengthens, status quo which has proved to be a stumbling block in establishment of a true democratic order in the country”, he said at a gathering of lawyers.
He said the US was a major threat to ‘genuine’ democracy in the country and elsewhere in the developing world. The rulers had linked their fate to the appeasement of Washington, which, he said, alone spelled doom for a safe and prosperous future and an egalitarian society here. The ruling classes would have to decide if they wanted the good of the people or that of imperialist powers, he said.
“Such a decision is necessary because America and democracy cannot coexist; we have to adopt policies, use a pragmatic approach and take other steps to ensure that we have a credible democratic culture and a sovereign foreign policy.” —Correspondent
