Montenegro is 192nd UN member

By Our Correspondent

UNITED NATIONS, June 28: The small Balkan nation of Montenegro, with a population of 650,000 people, has become the 192nd member state of the United Nations. The UN General Assembly admitted the new nation on Wednesday, approving by acclamation a resolution introduced by Austria’s UN ambassador.

Its admission comes a month after it ended its 88-year partnership with Serbia, completing the breakup of the former Yugoslavia.

General Assembly President Jan Eliasson called for approval of the resolution by acclamation and when there was no objection he banged the gavel and said: “I declare the Republic of Montenegro admitted to membership in the United Nations.”
