KARACHI: 3mgd more water for DHA

KARACHI, June 27: The city government has assured the Defence Housing Authority that the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board will start supplying additional 3 mgd water to the Authority from the K-III project within a month.

This will substantially improve the water scarcity situation in the DHA.

The Administrator DHA, Brig Maqsood Hussain, said this while talking to a representative delegation of the Defence Associations’ Co-ordination Committee (DACC) that called on him at the Authority's main office on Tuesday.

The DACC delegation led by its Secretary General, Aziz Suharwardy, later had a detailed meeting with the DHA and Clifton Cantonment Board managements to discuss the civic problems faced by residents.

The administrator elaborated that additional supply of 3 mgd from the water board coupled with 3 mgd from the DHA’s Desalination Plant, expected to become operational in December 2006, would be a quantum step forward that would ensure 24-hour tap water supply to the DHA.

He said the desalination project was the only viable solution to overcome the twin problems of water and power shortage in the coastal belt.

The DACC delegation highlighted the problems of choked sewerage lines, poor sanitation condition and depleting streetlights in the DHA, which needed immediate attention.

The administrator asked the CBC and DHA officials to address the civic problems in the Authority with a well-chalked strategy and proactive approach.

He stressed the need for permanent solutions rather than going for a piecemeal approach.

He asked the CBC staff to take tangible measures for increasing the depth and size of the main drains of sewers so that sewerage lines remained open and functional round the year.

He also asked the CBC to address the problem of poor conditions of streetlights on war-footing basis and to bring an immediate improvement in the same by improvising their system of working.

The administrator DHA said the CBC had increased the budget for garbage and debris collection and a new contractor employing additional machinery, workforce and reinvigorated strategy had started working to bring a visible improvement in cleanliness and hygienic condition in the DHA.

On a demand of the DACC delegation, the administrator asked the DHA’s Horticulture Department and the CBC to take every measure for renovating and rehabilitating the mini parks in Seaview.

Brig Maqsood said the DHA was committed to providing a clean, healthy and vibrant living environment to its residents.

He stressed the need for frequent interaction between the DHA and the CBC officials for speedy solution to problems.—PPI
