MMA to launch campaign from July 15: Fazl

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, June 26: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) will launch mass contact campaign from July 15, said Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Monday.

Speaking at a press conference after a meeting of the Supreme Council of the religious parties alliance, he said the mass contact campaign is being launched to build public opinion in favour of MMA’s objectives.

According to the schedule of the movement announced by the MMA leader, the alliance would hold a meeting of its Supreme Council in Peshawar on July 15 in which the performance of the MMA government in the NWFP would be reviewed and guidelines would be given for its improvement. This will be followed by a public rally in Peshawar on July 16.

The alliance will then hold rallies in Hyderabad (July 31), Nishtar Park Karachi (August 6), Minar-e-Pakistan Lahore (August 14) and Liaquat Bagh Rawalpindi (August 20).

Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who will also be heading a committee formed by the MMA for achieving the objectives of the mass contact campaign, called on the government to end military operation in North Waziristan and Balochistan and to withdraw troops from the tribal areas. He suggested that the traditional system of jirga should be used in tribal areas for solving the issues once the troops are withdrawn.

Regarding the Balochistan situation, the leader of opposition said the government should immediately place before the NA the reports of the parliamentary committees that had been formed to examine the situation in Balochistan and make recommendations for its redressal.
