PESHAWAR: Shelving of gas supply scheme criticised

PESHAWAR, June 25: Elected representatives of the Pabbi II union council (Nowshera) have expressed concern over the shelving of a gas supply scheme for their area.
Union Nazim Zulfiqar Ali and councillors told correspondents here that in case the scheme was not revived they would block the GT Road connecting Peshawar with the rest of the country.
The nazim said that President Gen Pervez Musharraf, during his visit to Nowshera district on March 2, 2005, had announced a gas supply scheme for some areas of the Nowshera district.
He said that Rs161.835 million was earmarked for the project, whereas Rs24.334 was reserved for the scheme in their union council.
The nazim said that the areas identified on the basis of feasibility also included Khudrezi and Khan Sher Garhi, two localities which form the Pabbi II union council.
Mr Ali said that gas supply to his union council was feasible as it had already been provided to adjacent areas some 25 years ago.
The nazim said the scheme had been shelved for the areas of his union council, but was allotted to another union council as its nazim belonged to the ruling Pakistan Muslim League.
He alleged that Federal Minister Amir Muqam, who is the provincial president of the PML, had ordered the shifting of the scheme to other area.
Pabbi II nazim and councillors have urged the president and prime minister to pay heed to the issue and restore the scheme.
