KARACHI: Consumption of more fluid urged

KARACHI, June 25: Karachiites have been strongly advised to ensure maximum intake of water and other drinks, preferably fruit juices, to protect themselves against the sultry season.

Dr Shakil Raza talking to APP on Saturday said working people, usually found to avoid water available outside their homes, must carry clean and potable water with them.

This may not be necessarily bottled water or that claimed to be mineral water. Even properly boiled water is good enough, he said.

Dr Mobina Agboatwala referring to an increase in the incidence of diarrhoeal diseases among children during this season has advised mothers to give them only fresh milk, properly cooked food and potable water.

“We keep on telling mothers to make milk or semi-liquid in small quantities that could be consumed by children at one time. The leftover should not be given to them after a gap of an hour or more,” the senior paediatrician said.

She and Dr Raza were both of the opinion that people must avoid stale food or over-ripen fruits and even hot food both chilly and spicy. Light and plain food is advisable, they said.

The two doctors also advised people to cover their heads properly while outside and preferably use cotton clothes in light colours.

People who might faint due to heat must be immediately moved to some shade and no attempt should be made to make them drink anything till they regain consciousness, Dr Mobina said.—APP
