KARACHI: Good results to be seen in education sector: Hamida

KARACHI, June 21: The Sindh Minister for Education and Literacy, Dr Hamida Khuhro, has said that results of the steps taken by the present government for improvement of education at college and school levels would soon be seen.

She said this while replying to questions of MPAs in the Sindh Assembly session on Wednesday.

Dr Hamida said the government would be taking over the administrative control of colleges from district governments from July 1, and a comprehensive plan was being prepared in this regard after analyzing the situation and assessing facilities at colleges.

She said that during the ban, the government had with the approval of the competent forum recruited lecturers in various disciplines through the SPSC, or on ad hoc basis, but due to some doubts about the selection, the process of selection/recruitment through the SPSC had been stopped for a short period.

In reply to another question, she said that in 1998, 48 female primary teachers were removed in Hyderabad due to illegalities in their appointments and action was also taken against the officers who had violated the rules in this regard.

She said the posting of officers of lower grades to the upper grades in own pay and scale had been made due to shortage of appropriate grade officers, but the government had paced up the promotion process to address the shortage.

The minister said that such a process to rationalize the posting of appropriate officers had been started from District Ghotki.

She also assured that an inquiry would be made into the posting of a lower grade officer, who belongs to a landlord of area, as ADO in Taluka Dokri, Larkana.

Dr Hamida assured the house of providing the details of OPs’ postings in Larkana, informing that some district nazims had also violated rules in this connection, she added.

An MPA from the opposition, Jam Saifullah Dharejo, appreciated the efforts of the Sindh education minister, saying that improvement in the education sector had been brought with her efforts. He, however, criticized the role of nazims towards education.

The education minister announced that in order to improve the affairs of educational institutes, a new cadre of administration was being introduced by dividing the teaching cadre.

She announced that the issuance of appointment orders to teaching posts would be started very soon, saying that the shortage of teachers would be covered with the start of the new academic year. She regretted that female teachers were not ready to serve in their villages.

She said that new appointments would purely be on union council and village basis, but made it clear that teachers not performing duties properly would be removed because there were many unemployed youth willing to work.

The minister expressed disappointment on the quality of construction and repair works of school buildings being done by the works department.

She said that under the provision of missing facilities, boundary walls, lavatories, water, etc will be provided to schools in the next financial year.

The minister on the occasion assured a minority MPA that the due importance in the recruitment process would be given to persons of the minority communities.

She acknowledged that a big no of teachers belonging to the minority communities were serving with full commitment and dedication.—APP
