US support sought on Siachen

By Our Correspondent

WASHINGTON, June 19: An expert on South Asian affairs said at a seminar on Monday said that the US could help resolve the Siachen dispute by providing ‘technical support for monitoring technologies and verification procedures’ to facilitate an agreement.

Dr Samina Ahmed, project director of International Crisis Group, said if India and Pakistan wanted to move ahead and resolve other issues, they must settle the Siachen dispute.

Explaining the subject of the discussion, “India, Pakistan and Kashmir: stabilising a cold peace,” Dr Ahmed said the US support was also essential to consolidate the normalisation process between India and Pakistan.
