KARACHI: Frequent power failures perturb citizens

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, June 19: Intermittent disruption in power supply all the day long on Monday added to the miseries of Karachiites who are already experiencing harsh weather conditions and sleepless nights due to the same reasons. However, the KESC insisted that it was not carrying out loadshedding in the evening and night hours as sufficient electricity was available with it to cater to the city’s requirement.

Power consumers in a large number called newspaper offices to complain about disruption in power supply to their households on Sunday night and Monday, saying that KESC telephone numbers of the concerned complaint centres would remain either busy or unattended, making it almost impossible to get a complaint lodged or talk to a responsible official.

They also complained that much of the time the supply was resumed, fluctuation of voltage posed a constant threat to their expensive electrical items, some of them already damaged.

They observed that the early closure of commercial outlets had provided no relief to other power consumers.

A caller from Block 20 of Federal B Area said that his area remained without power between 8pm and 9pm on Sunday night, for another hour from 4am on Monday and for a further 40 minutes from 11am.

A consumer from Block 3 said that he experienced four-hour power failure, from 11:30am to 3:30pm, on Monday.

A resident of Bloch H, North Nazimabad, said power supply to his area was discontinued for one hour early in the morning and again at 9am for one hour more.

Rehan Rizvi, a resident of Block 13-A of Gulshan-i-Iqbal said that his area experienced three spells of power cut two hours each.

A caller from Sector 11-G of North Karachi said that his area remained without power from 2am to 8am. A resident of Sector 10 in Orangi Town said that power supply remained suspended in his area from 8pm to 10pm on Sunday and again from 5am to 6am on Monday.

A resident of Sector 41-A of Korangi, T Area, said that his area had suffered power suspension from 7pm to 9pm on Sunday and from 3pm to 4pm on Monday. A caller from Dastagir Society, F. B. area said that power supply to his area had been suspended for five times on Sunday for 15-30 minutes duration. A resident of Block 6, PECHS said that his area was without power for two hours from 3pm on Monday.

A KESC spokesman told Dawn that there had been no major power breakdown in the city. However, a cable had developed fault in Liaquatabad owing to which the area remained without power for around a couple of hours on Monday. He said that the repair work was being carried out.

He claimed that no loadshedding was being carried out during the evening and night hours as owing to the early closure of shops, the KESC system was able to save between 70 and 90 megawatts for other consumers. He said that the demand during the evening hours remained at around 2,100 megawatts which the KESC was meeting easily.
