KARACHI: Rulers will quit days after Sept drive: Qazi

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, June 18: Amir of Jamaat-i-Islami Qazi Hussain Ahmad has said that Gen Pervez Musharraf has closed all doors to a democratic change in the country and, as such, the opposition is left with no option but to launch a movement.

He was talking to newsmen at the JI office, Idara Noor-i-Haq, after attending the party membership training held at the Quba auditorium here on Sunday.

Qazi Hussain said the decision to launch the movement against the present rulers in September had been taken jointly by all components of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal. “When millions of people will converge on Islamabad, the rulers will find no place to hide,” he remarked.

The Qazi, who is also president of the MMA, said that Gen Musharraf was ruling over the country with support of the United States. The flawed policies pursued by the rulers had turned Balochistan and Waziristan into a volcano, he said, adding that the gravity of the situation could be gauged from the fact that a journalist, who had got a picture of the US brutalities in Waziristan published, had been killed in mysterious circumstances.

Claiming that the Pakistan army had conceded its failure in tribal areas, the MMA chief demanded sending the armed forces back to their barracks, and said this was in the interest of the country, as well as the military institution.

“A change in the country is inevitable,” he remarked, adding that it would be a matter of five-six days after tens of thousands of people would take to the street to demand a change.

In reply to a question, he said if the upcoming general elections were held again under the supervision of Gen Musharraf, the results would be no different from those of the previous ones and the recently held local government polls.

Speaking on the occasion, JI Secretary General Syed Munawwar Hasan said that it was a unanimous decision of the MMA, ARD and all other pro-democracy parties that Gen Musharraf should resign and the general elections were held in a free, fair and transparent manner under an impartial election commission.

He made it clear again that the opposition would not take part in the elections if they were held under the supervision of Gen Musharraf.
