KHAIRPUR, June 14: Six journalists were injured in an attack on the Thari Mirwah Press Club on Wednesday evening. The injured, journalists included Abdul Hafeez Shar, Mukhtiar Qasmani, Mehmood and Illahi Bux.

The journalists were kicked, punched and beaten up with batons over two dozen armed men. The cause of the attacked could not be ascertained.

Later, journalists and a large number of local people staged a sit-in outside the press club demanding registration of a case against the attackers.

It is learnt that police have arrested some of people involved in the attack.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists has expressed concern over attacks on and threats to journalists, particularly those covering jirgas and karo-kari, in the interior of Sindh, reports PPI.

PFUJ leaders said in a joint statement that a Jacobabad-based correspondent of Sindh TV, Sarmad Kanri, and KTN correspondent Mubarrak Bhatti received threats from tribesmen who had held the recent jirga that decided to give the hands of five girls in marriage as a fine.

The PFUJ appealed to journalists to cover the Sindh budget on June 15 by wearing black armbands to register their protest against the rising incidents of violence against journalists.

The statement notes that the Sindh TV bureau office was attacked in Jacobabad who destroyed computers and manhandled an office assistant. It also condemned the attack on the president of the Pano Aqil Press Club.

JACOBABAD: A large number of media personnel staged a demonstration on Wednesday to protest against threats being issued to a journalist for filing reports about a recently held jirga in Thull which ordered that five girls of a family be given in marriage to a rival family to resolve a karo-kari dispute, reports our correspondent.
