SANGHAR, June 12: Farmers on Monday blocked the Khipro-Mirpurkhas road in protest against water shortage in Sarhal Shakh of the Khipro irrigation sub-division. The protesters held a sit-in on the road and blocked traffic for two hours.

Akram Chohan, Ismail Chanhio and Huzoor Bux Shar led the protests.

They said that water in Sarhal had been closed for 12 days on the pretext of rotation.

They said that it was a very crucial time to sow cotton and stoppage of water for an hour was not affordable.

Taluka Nazim Sarfaraz Junejo, UC nazims Ismail Dars, Amanullah Shar came along with irrigation SDO Iqbal Memon to pacify the farmers.

The SDO promised to provide water within next 24 hours.

He said that there was a shortage in the main Khipro canal and water would be provided to tail-end areas.

The farmers demanded that Rangers should be deputed on the main canals to implement rotation on direct outlets.

They said that at present branches were closed under rotation but direct outlets were exempted from the rotation system and they were open round the year.

DUSTY WINDS: Dusty winds have made the life miserable in the district.

The warm dusty winds are blowing for several days and everything is covered with a thick layer of dust. They have affected cotton, sugarcane, chilli and vegetable crops.

They have created a drought-like situation and increased demand for irrigation water.
