India pile on runs

GROS ISLET (St Lucia), June 11: Rahul Dravid's 23rd Test century helped India pile on the runs on the second morning of the second Test against the West Indies on Sunday.

Dravid scored 146 and guided India to 485 for five at lunch, being dismissed two balls before the interval when he chipped a wide long-hop from leg-spinner Ramnaresh Sarwan to Brian Lara at backward point.

Mohammad Kaif batted brightly to score 89 not out after he and Dravid resumed on India's overnight score of 361 for four and added 124 runs in 29 overs.

Kaif outscored a fluent Dravid, resuming on 18 not out and stroking eight boundaries in the session.

But it was part-time bowler Sarwan who eventually ended the 179-run fifth-wicket partnership with a poor delivery that Dravid would have expected to hit to the boundary. The Indian captain faced 234 balls and hit 16 fours.

A dazzling century by Virender Sehwag was the highlight of Saturday’s opening day.

Sehwag, who was eventually out for 180, showing brutal aggression but also fine shot selection, narrowly missed becoming the fifth man to score a hundred before lunch on the opening day of a Test.

The 27-year-old faced just 190 balls in his 12th Test century and hit 20 fours and two sixes.
