Illegal parking: Malaysian PM fined

KUALA LUMPUR, June 11: Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will pay off 11 tickets for illegal parking and speeding on Monday, apparently unaware that the summonses were outstanding, a report said.

“I was just informed by (Deputy Inspector General of Police) Musa Hassan. I did not know about them,” he was quoted as saying by the Sunday Star newspaper.

The tickets were issued in Abdullah’s name on three cars but it was not immediately known who was driving them at the time.

“The last time I had summons, I paid them all. Thank you for letting me know. I will find out who were driving the cars on those days,” he said.

Abdullah said he would pay the summons amounting to some 278 dollars on Monday.

The paper said the 11 offences were for traffic obstruction, parking at no parking areas, parking at the wrong side of the road and speeding. The offences were believed to go back to June 2002.—AFP
