Mirwaiz condemns Geelani’s arrest

By Jawed Naqvi

New Delhi, June 9: Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday condemned the incarceration of Syed Ali Shah Geelani by Indian authorities in Jammu on Wednesday, signalling moves for a major rapprochement between the estranged leaders of Kashmiri resistance.

A statement by the All Parties Hurriyat Conference sent by email to Dawn here quoted the Mirwaiz as “strongly condemning the imprisonment of Kashmir elderly leader in Poonch”.

He said Syed Geelani’s arrest had exposed as false claims by the Indian government that it was keen to improve human rights conditions in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Mirwaiz demanded immediate release of Mr Geelani and all other jailed political prisoners. “This would pave the way for a dialogue to resume with the Indian government on resolving the Kashmir issue,” the statement said.

Mr Geelani was arrested on Wednesday.
