Disciplinary action against 1,509 police personnel

RAWALPINDI, June 9: Inspector General Police Ziaul Hassan has taken disciplinary action against 1,509 police officers and jawans in the wake of complaints of illegal detention, torture and registration of false cases.

A spokesperson for the Punjab police said that the IGP presided over a meeting at his office on Friday and revealed that disciplinary action has been taken against police officials during the last ten months.

The meeting also reviewed the performance of inspection and vigilance system established for accountability of the police force.

Inspection and vigilance teams had, so far, conducted surprise visits of 224 police stations, patrol posts, units and offices in the far flung areas of the province and sent their reports to the IGP, the meeting was informed.

The reports contained incidents of illegal detention, torture, registration of false cases and improper investigation. In the lights of these reports, the IGP took action against police personnel, the spokesperson added.

The meeting was informed that police’s performance had improved in the wake of introduction of accountability system in the department.

APP ADDS: Under the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi the IGP took the disciplinary action against corrupt and incompetent police officials included deputy superintendents (DSPs), SHOs and sub-inspectors.

Additional IGs, DIGs and senior police officers attended the meeting to review performance of the inspection and vigilance teams formed for the accountability of corrupt officials.

IGP Hassan expressed satisfaction over the performance of inspection and vigilance teams and said enough resources were being provided by the government to improve capability and image of police force.
