AL threatens to launch agitation

DHAKA, June 9: The Awami League on Friday threatened to launch an agitation against the government on June 12 if it did not accept the opposition’s proposal for reforming electoral laws.

The AL set a Sunday deadline for the government to accept the opposition’s demand for electoral reforms or face ‘continuous agitation’, including strikes.

The party urged the government to stop the arrest of opposition activists in the run-up to the ‘siege of Dhaka’ slated for Sunday.

“We decided to go for a continuous movement, including strikes, from June 12 if our reform proposals are not accepted by June 11 and the mass arrest of activists is not stopped,” AL general secretary Abdul Jalil said after a meeting of the party’s working committee.
