ISLAMABAD, June 8: Some members of the committee constituted by the prime minister to review proposed amendments to the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC) Ordinance have expressed reservations about the way the Ministry of Health is handling matters and ignoring the committee’s recommendations.

In a written protest sent to the health ministry one of the members, Prof (Dr) Mehmood Chaudhry, said it was strange that the minutes of the meeting held almost a month back had not been notified.

The meeting had made several recommendations for incorporation in the proposed amendments.

“These recommendations were made following indept review, anxious discussions and with overwhelming consensus of the committee members,” a member told this reporter.

Instead of notifying the minutes, the health ministry circulated the amended draft legislation.

One of the members refused to comment on the draft legislation stating that it was not possible for him to send his comments regarding the present draft of legislative amendments unless the proposed changes were consonant with the recommendations already made in the first meeting of the committee.

A member, who had reviewed the draft legislation, said he was dismayed to find that very few of the recommendations made by the committee were incorporated in the draft, whereas certain changes were made, which were neither discussed nor recommended by the committee.

Meanwhile, the committee constituted to propose amendments to the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) Ordinance 1962 had also run into snags.

The committee comprising some eminent professors and senior doctors from all the four provinces, PMA, PMDC and the Armed Forces Medical Directorate was constituted to review the CPSP Ordinance and tune it with the needs of the present day.

However, one of the very senior members, has opted out of the committee expressing reservations about the composition of the committee particularly over its convener.
