ST JOHN'S (Antigua), June 7: The West Indies last pair of Fidel Edwards and Corey Collymore hung on grimly to force a dramatic draw in the first Test against India on Tuesday.
The duo survived the last 19 balls together and the West Indies, set 392 to win, finished on 298 for nine.
The match had seemed headed for stalemate when the West Indies reached tea on 158 for three, but India applied the pressure relentlessly to take six wickets in the final session.
Edwards and Collymore were both one not out at the end after leg-spinner Anil Kumble had come close to bowling India to victory by taking four for 107.
There was little else for Indians to cheer as Chris Gayle and Shivnarine Chanderpaul added 86 runs in the second session.
Seventeen balls after tea Gayle pushed forward to a straight delivery from Kumble and was leg-before for a knock of 69 that took 188 balls but was studded with nine fours and three sixes.
Gayle's dismissal ended a steadying stand of 99 runs and eight overs later Kumble prised the once shut door to victory open a little more when Chanderpaul was adjudged caught by Rahul Dravid at slip for 62.
Then off-spinner Virender Sehwag took India significantly closer to an unlikely triumph by having Dwayne Bravo caught behind by Mahendra Dhoni for 28. In his next over, Denesh Ramdin was well held at slip by Dravid for eight.
Five overs after taking the new ball fast bowler Munaf Patel had a tentative Ian Bradshaw caught behind by Dhoni for 10 and there were 3.1 overs left in the match after Kumble bowled Dave Mohammed for a career-best 52 to leave the West Indies tottering on 297 for nine.
Number 11 Collymore raised a roar from the stands when he took a single off the first ball of Kumble's last over, the penultimate over of the match.
Edwards, who faced 36 balls for his single, blocked out the rest of Kumble's over. Collymore did likewise in the final over, which was bowled by Sreesanth.
