Generous incentive for Koreans

LEVERKUSEN, June 7: South Korea's players will each receive almost $530,000 if they win the World Cup, the Korean Football Association said on Wednesday.

The bounty is the third-highest among the 32 teams at the finals in Germany, the KFA said, with Spain ($712,000) and England ($546,000) occupying the top two places.

Korea's players will receive over $100,000 if they get past the first round, $210,000 for reaching the quarterfinals and $315,000 if they match their 2002 feat and make the semis.

There was no figure available for what they would earn if they reach the final and lose.

“The plan is to offer a similar bonus system as that on offer during the 2002 World Cup,” said the KFA's Kim Ho-gon.

“Coach Dick Advocaat has been informed of the plan.”

Members of the 2002 squad each got $250,000 for reaching the last four but only after a “contribution-based system” was rejected by the players.—Reuters
