PESHAWAR, June 7: The NWFP chapter of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal has expressed concern over increasing lawlessness in the province and said the federal government is not helping the provincial government to resolve the issue.

“The provincial government has asked the centre to increase the strength of police force and send back platoons of the Frontier Constabulary from Punjab and Sindh to the NWFP but the federal government had not accepted the proposals yet”, said Hakim Abdul Waheed, the provincial information secretary of the MMA.

He told a press conference on Wednesday that Chief Minister Akram Durrani had recently briefed the MMA leadership on the performance of the provincial government.

“The MMA leadership found the overall performance of the MMA government satisfactory but expressed concern over declining law and order situation in the province and some other issues,” Mr Hakim said.

Citing reasons for an increase in crime rate, particularly street crimes, he said since the provincial government had limited resources, it could not effectively handle the situation on its own.

He said the MMA leadership apprised the chief minister about poor performance of the education, law and finance commissions, constituted to recommend reforms in the sectors.
