KARACHI: Governor for steps to curb cellphone snatchings


KARACHI, June 7: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan has stressed the need for making result-oriented efforts for containing incidents of mobile phone snatching.

Presiding over a high- meeting in the Governor’s House to review the steps aimed at curbing the mobile phone snatching incidents, the governor directed the mobile phone companies to ensure compliance with the necessary regulations in the process of issuance of mobile connections.

Sind Chief Secretary Fazl-ur-Rehman, IG Jehangir Mirza, Principal Secretary Mohammad Saleem Khan, Home Secretary Ghulam Mohammad Mohtarram, CCPO Niaz Ahmed Siddiqui, PTA heads, CPLC chief Sharfuddin Memon and the chief executives of mobile phone companies were present.

“The mobile phone connections issued in a non-transparent manner are used in carrying out several heinous activities while people are even killed in incidents of mobile snatching,” Dr Ibad pointed out.

He said in order to overcome these crimes, mobile phone companies would have to play their effective role in blocking the use of snatched mobile sets and, for this purpose, ordered these companies to immediately ensure use of modern technology.

POWER SUPPLY: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan on Tuesday made detailed deliberations on intermittent electricity breakdowns in the city.

He was presiding over a meeting of officials of the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation, said a statement.

Provincial ministers, advisers to chief minister, the chief secretary and elected representatives of local government and the chief executive officer of the KESC were also present.The governor called for effective coordination between elected representatives of local governments and KESC officials to minimise electricity consumption.

Dr Ibad directed the KESC officials to set up their emergency centres in different areas for immediate resolution of problems faced by people.

The governor asked the town nazims to contact the concerned individuals and associations for minimising power consumption at marriage halls and for the closure of shops earlier than their routine timings.

He directed the officials to minimise power consumption at government departments. In this connection, some lights and other electronic appliances were shut down during the meeting as an initial step in this regard.

Besides several other problems being faced by the masses due to frequent electricity breakdowns, electricity billing and other matters regarding electricity consumer meters were also discussed.

KESC officials told the meeting that all-out efforts were being made to ensure smooth power supply to the city.

They said attention was being paid to providing immediate relief to the people and also the for resolution of all other electricity supply related problems on a permanent basis.

They said noticeable improvement would be observed in the provision of electricity to Karachiites in the next three months. Rs45 billion would be spent in the next three years to streamline the electricity network of the city.

Among other notables, Federal Minister Safwanullah, Sindh Minister Syed Sardar Ahmed, Deputy Convener of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement Coordination Committee, Dr Farooq Sattar, in charge of the committee Anwer Alam and others were also present.—APP
